BPFI National Banking Conference 2024

The BPFI National Banking Conference 2024  ‘Future Focused Retail Banking’ took place on Tuesday 11th June 2024 in a packed Round Room at the Mansion House Dublin.

The event was moderated by broadcaster and journalist Richard Curran, with a welcome address from BPFI President Cathy Bryce, Managing Director Capital Markets, AIB. Minister for Finance, Michael McGrath gave the opening keynote address followed by Colin Ryan, Partner & Country Lead, EY Financial Services whose keynote provided an overview and insights on the future of retail banking.

The first session of the conference focused on housing and mortgages with a panel discussion on how to optimise the role of the banking sector in the provision of housing development and mortgage finance. Richard Curran was joined by panellists Tom Kinsella, AIB; Alan Hartley, Bank of Ireland; Patrick Farrell, PTSB; Louise Heenan, Department of Finance; and Conor O’Connell, Construction Industry Confederation. Richard continued the conversation on the housing and mortgage market with a fireside chat with Dr Frances Ruane, National Competitiveness Council of Ireland and Michael O’Flynn, O’Flynn Group where they provided their perspectives on the delivery of sustainable housing solutions for a growing population and the implications for the wider economy.

Our second session of the day focused on customer engagement with a keynote address delivered by Colm Kincaid, Director of Consumer Protection at the Central Bank of Ireland on the Consumer Protection Code. Niall Corrigan, Partner, EY Financial Services gave a presentation to set the scene before the panel discussion which explored the opportunities and challenges presented in meeting the standards of service delivery demanded by today’s consumers. The discussion on the Future of Customer Engagement and Banking Channels was moderated by Niall Corrigan with panellists John Brennan, AIB; Deirdre Gavin, Bank of Ireland Group; Ger Mitchell, PTSB; David Malone, Irish League of Credit Unions; and Alejandro Gomes, Avant.

We concluded the event with a much-anticipated fireside chat with Philip Lane, Chief Economist, European Central Bank who gave his assessment of the recent evolution of inflation in the euro area, together with the implications for monetary policy as well as the broader euro area economic outlook.
