The Irish Final of the European Money Quiz 2024 took place on Thursday 21st March. Maria Miller & Lily O’Connor from Presentation College Carlow beat competition from over 2,000 students to represent Ireland in the European finals, which takes place in Brussels on the 19th of April. Economist Webinar

BPFI hosted its 7th annual Chief Economists Masterclass on the 12th March 2024. The recording is available on YouTube – see link below. This is a fantastic opportunity for students in the Leaving Cert cycle to gain insights from Ireland’s top economists ahead of their exams. During the webinar senior economists from AIB and Bank of Ireland each give a presentation on the top economics issues of the day, followed by a panel discussion.

European Money Quiz

The Irish Final of The European Money Quiz 2024 took place on March 21st. Maria Miller and Lily O’Connor, third year students at Presentation College Carlow, beat competition from over 2,000 students across the country and are the first female duo to represent Ireland in the European finals in Brussels which takes place on the 19th of April.  This is Europe’s biggest financial literacy competition to improve the financial literacy of 13–15-year-olds.

The live online Irish final saw students across Ireland play directly against each other in real time with Kahoot! Check back for more information on registrations for the 2025 competition.

How do I take part and how does the quiz work?

The quiz is open to students aged 13-15 years* who are looking to test their knowledge of finance and monetary issues. Students play in teams of two and all students are entitled to take part, irrespective of the subjects they are studying. 

The 2024 competition took place in two phases:

Irish Final

National competitions are held online in up to 28 countries across Europe, including in Ireland, to determine the finalists from each country who will travel to Brussels to participate in the European Final.

  • The Irish Final was broadcast live through a Zoom link (provided to teachers registered for the quiz) at 12 noon, Thursday 21st March 2024, organised by Banking & Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI).
  • Students across Ireland played directly against each other in real time using Kahoot! learning platform.
  • Playing in teams of two, students answered 15 financial education related questions with four possible answers to choose from. The quiz usually takes 10-15 minutes with 30-60 seconds to answer each question.
  • The team that answers the most correct questions in the fastest time wins.

* Participating students should be born after April 19, 2008 to join the competition. All students within the age category are entitled to compete, irrespective of their study subjects.

Prize: The winning team are invited to travel to Brussels to represent Ireland in the European Finals on the 18th and 19th of April 2024. The travel expenses of this trip are part of the prize package and are sponsored by Banking & Payments Federation of Ireland. The team will also receive a trophy for their school. Subject to availability of the winning students a prize giving ceremony will take place at the offices of BPFI on a date in April 2024.

Last year, David Rath and Alex Jacewicz, second year students at Douglas Community School Cork won the 2023 Irish Final and headed to Brussels to represent Ireland in the European finals.

European Finals

  • National Winners will compete for the European championship in a final competition between all participating countries on the 18th and 19th of April 2024 in Brussels, organised by the European Banking Federation (EBF).
  • Similar to the national finals the team who answers the most correct questions in the fastest time win.

Prize: The winners of the European Finals will receive a cash prize for their school. Further details will be published shortly.

European Money Week 2024

The quiz takes place ahead of European Money Weekan annual initiative organised by the European Banking Federation, of which BPFI is a member, to promote financial education across Europe. Throughout one week in March each year, hundreds of activities are held in 30+ countries to promote financial literacy in Europe. This year Money Week took place from 18th to 24th March 2024.
